How to design a lab gas supply system? The correct way to handle gas pipelines

The laboratory gas supply system (piping engineering) is one of the most specialized subsystems in lab projects. Equipment like gas chromatography (GC), TGA (which needs nitrogen and air switching), elemental analyzers, and glove boxes all require a stable and clean gas supply. Poor gas line design can cause baseline instability and data fluctuations at best, and safety accidents at worst.  


There are three key elements in gas line design: First, the choice of pipe materials. Different gases need different pipe materials—high-purity nitrogen/argon/helium should use 316L stainless steel pipes (electropolished inside), flammable gases like acetylene and hydrogen must use seamless copper or stainless steel pipes (never use copper alloys with more than 65% copper to prevent acetylene-copper explosions), and compressed air can use galvanized steel pipes. You absolutely shouldn’t use the same pipe for all gases just to save money.  


Second, cylinder and piping layout. Flammable gas cylinders need to be set up separately, with explosion-proof walls and leak alarms, keeping a safe distance from the lab area. Inert gas cylinders can be centralized and distributed to each workstation through secondary pressure-regulating panels.  


Third, terminal configuration. Every gas outlet should have a shut-off valve, pressure regulator, and gauge. For equipment like GC that requires extremely high gas purity, it’s recommended to install gas purifiers like deoxidizers and dryers at the terminal.
