Precision analytical instruments are far more sensitive to the environment than most people realize. An 800,000 yuan DSC placed in a subpar temperature and humidity environment might have worse baseline stability and data repeatability than a 300,000 yuan basic model placed in a standard environment. Proper environmental control is the first line of defense in protecting your equipment investment and ensuring data quality.
The standard environmental conditions for the precision instrument area in the new materials lab are 23±2℃ and 50±10% RH. DSC and DMA are the most sensitive to the environment—baseline drift can occur when temperature fluctuations exceed ±3℃, and too much humidity can cause condensation on sensor surfaces. TGA is less sensitive to humidity but still requires stable room temperature to ensure accurate balance measurements. Universal testing machines and FTIR have relatively relaxed requirements for temperature and humidity (temperature 15-30℃, humidity <80% RH) but extreme conditions should still be avoided.
When it comes to AC selection, the precision instrument area should use precision air conditioners (not comfort air conditioners). The key difference lies in temperature and humidity control accuracy and 24-hour continuous operation reliability. It's recommended to set up N+1 redundancy (two AC units backing each other up) to prevent the lab environment from going out of control if one fails. Additionally, vibration control (DMA and balances are extremely vibration-sensitive), electromagnetic interference protection, and cleanliness management must also be considered—if sensors on DSC and rheometers get contaminated with dust, replacement costs can easily run into tens of thousands of yuan.
