South Sudan is one of the youngest countries in Africa, and the oil industry is the lifeblood of its economy. The oil fields operated by GPOC (Greater Pioneer Operating Company) required a laboratory capable of independently performing crude oil quality testing and oilfield chemical analysis—from equipment setup to installation training, all handled by a Chinese team. Dehui Scientific Instrument took on this challenging overseas lab project.
The project faced multiple challenges: First, equipment selection—the oilfield lab needed not the DSC and rheometers of a typical new materials lab, but petroleum-specific equipment like crude oil density meters, viscosity testers, flash point testers, sulfur analyzers, and distillation testers. Basic physico-chemical testing capabilities for oilfield chemicals (demulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, etc.) were also required.
Second, logistics and on-site installation—from China to South Sudan, the equipment had to go through sea transport (about 45 days), land transport (hundreds of kilometers from the port to the oilfield), and on-site lifting. All equipment had to be specially packaged for shock and moisture protection. Upon arrival, installing, commissioning, and accepting the equipment in temperatures above 40°C was an extreme test of engineers' skills and physical endurance.
Third, training and knowledge transfer—we provided GPOC local technicians with systematic training from basic theory to hands-on operation, and prepared bilingual (Chinese-English) SOPs to ensure the lab could operate independently after the Chinese team left.
