In composite manufacturing—whether hand lay-up, compression, RTM (resin transfer molding), or fiber winding—resin viscosity is a core process parameter determining impregnation quality and final product performance. Excessive viscosity leads to incomplete fiber penetration (excessive dry spots and porosity), while too low viscosity leads to resin loss (insufficient adhesive content). Accurate viscosity measurement and control in composite material production are not "bonus points" but rather a "passing line."
The level of viscosity measurement tools matches the requirements of composite material processes: The Brookfield rotary viscometer is suitable for QC-level single-point viscosity measurement—it provides a viscosity value at a fixed speed, is simple to operate, and low cost (30,000-80,000 RMB), meeting the needs of incoming material inspection and daily process monitoring. The rotational rheometer is the core tool for research and process optimization—it not only measures viscosity curves (viscosity changes at different shear rates, simulating the entire process from mixing to dipping), but also yield stress (assessing resin flow resistance in fiber gaps) and gelation time (measuring G'-G intersections via time scan mode to precisely determine available operating windows). For resins used in prepregs, the dynamic temperature scanning of the rheometer can directly simulate the curing curve of the autoclave.
Recommended configuration strategy: QC laboratory with Brookfield viscometers for daily incoming material inspection and finished product release, R&D and process labs with rotary rheometers for in-depth rheological characterization and process parameter optimization—two sets of tools complement each other, not replace each other.
