Building a laboratory for a new materials company isn’t something that happens all at once—a startup adhesive company and a pre-IPO modified plastics leader have completely different lab requirements. It’s recommended to take a three-stage approach, matching testing capabilities to the company's development stage.
Level 1: Basic QC Lab (1.5-3 million RMB). The main goal is to establish incoming material inspection and finished product testing capabilities, meeting the basic requirements of the ISO 9001 quality management system. Equipment includes: 1 general-purpose DSC (for measuring Tg and melting point, 400-500k), 1 universal testing machine (with tensile and peel fixtures, 300-500k), 1 FTIR-ATR (for fast component identification, 250-400k), 1 TGA (for filler content and thermal stability, 350-450k), plus basic supporting equipment (balances, ovens, pH meters, etc., 150-200k). This setup can cover over 70% of routine testing needs.
Level 2: R&D + QC Integrated Lab (5-8 million RMB). On top of Level 1, add: 1 high-end DSC (with MDSC function, 600-800k), 1 rotational rheometer (600-900k), expanded universal testing machine fixture matrix (adding bending, shear, high/low temperature chambers, etc., 300-500k), 1 GPC system (500-700k), and implement a LIMS or instrument networking solution (100-200k). At this stage, the lab has strong capabilities for in-depth research characterization.
Level 3: Comprehensive Innovation Platform (10-15 million RMB). Add DMA (800-1000k), capillary rheometer (500-700k), laser flash thermal conductivity analyzer LFA (600-800k), TGA-FTIR combined system (800-1200k). With a sound environmental engineering and data management system, it can even provide third-party testing services externally.
