Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is the most frequently used thermal analysis instrument in polymer material research and development. From raw material selection to product failure analysis, DSC runs through the entire lifecycle of polymer materials. Here are the four core applications of DSC in polymer R&D.
1. Accurate Measurement of Glass Transition Temperature (Tg)
Tg is the temperature at which a polymer transitions from a glassy state to a highly elastic state, directly affecting the material's usable temperature range and processing conditions. The T4P heat flux sensor in the TA Discovery DSC offers industry-leading sensitivity, capable of detecting sub-microwatt heat flux changes, and has excellent resolution for weak Tg signals in highly cross-linked or highly filled systems.
2. Analysis of Crystallization and Melting Behavior
DSC can measure a polymer's crystallization temperature (Tc), melting temperature (Tm), degree of crystallinity, and crystallization kinetics. These parameters directly affect a product's mechanical properties, optical clarity, and processability. Modulated DSC (MDSC) technology can separate reversible and irreversible heat flows, distinguishing complex thermal events such as melting, cold crystallization, and relaxation enthalpy changes.
3. Curing Reaction Kinetics
For thermosetting resins (like epoxy and phenolic resins), DSC measures the exothermic curve of the curing reaction to calculate the degree of cure, reaction activation energy, and optimal curing conditions. The combination of isothermal curing followed by dynamic post-curing is the industry-standard method for evaluating resin curing characteristics.
4. Oxidation Induction Time (OIT)
OIT is a key indicator for evaluating a polymer's antioxidant stability and is widely used in industry standards for PE pipes, cable materials, and more. DSC tests under specific temperatures and oxygen atmospheres; the longer the OIT, the stronger the material's antioxidant capacity.
